Sharepoint can you download an older version

I can't seem to find that option in SP AFAIK it's the same in the version. But does version control enabled in your list? It's disabled by default and you need to enable it on the list settings page before you will be able to view the versions history. My bad, I couldn't see the image at the moment I read the response so it didn't make sense to me.

Now that I see it with the image attached I understand it. Thank you! But when I open the drop-down, I get "version history", and select. Next level down, I get a time-stamped list of the history of docs so far, so good. However, if I select the drop-down for one of the versions, it offers to "restore" where all I want to do is "read" -- I don't get a download option and I don't want to restore the old version in front of the current version. Is there something wrong with site settings or is it user error?

You don't need to open the dropdown - just click on the link I've highlighted in red. Show 3 more comments. Komal Komal 61 1 1 silver badge 1 1 bronze badge.

Email Required, but never shown. The Overflow Blog. Who owns this outage? People make mistakes, and Versioning provides the safety net. SharePoint Lists items data and Library documents files have the ability to store, track, and restore the previous state of the item or document to how it was before a user changed it.

The end user can view, delete, and restore a version if they have the correct permissions in the library or list. An interface is provided to let you control how many versions you'd like to retain. The user must have the Manage Lists permission capability to enable versioning. If you can Enable versioning, you can Disable versioning. Disabling versioning doesn't delete the old versions. End users receive no notification of this change.

A Cautionary Tale: As site owner, if you disable Versioning and don't tell your end users, they'll notify you. In person. You can also see a link to the version history in the details pane. In SharePoint on-premises , , , you can view version history by clicking on the link in the ribbon menu.

In both products, Version History opens in a modal dialog box, with options to View, Restore, or Delete the entry. I don't see how that will work because when I do a "Copy to" it doesn't copy the version history as well. So a Copy To only gives me the latest copy and I don't want to revert the original to the previous version for comparison because I may want to keep the latest version. I'm not sure what you're saying. If I make a copy of the spreadsheet which already has multiple versions saved for it it's the latest version of that spreadsheet.

So if you mean by "original" that it is before I create the copy the only file for that spreadsheet in the system once again with it's many versions than yes. But it's not the original version in that the spreadsheet has had multiple versions saved for it. So, if within that spreadsheet there are multiple versions, I can't compare two versions of the same spreadsheet because to do that as far as I'm aware I need to first revert to a previous version which I'm not yet sure I want to do just to compare two versions of the same sheet to one another.

Have you tried setting the library to require checkout. That way, they can still open the file, but if they want to open it for editing, they have to check it out. You would also have to educate the users on when to click "Check Out" at the top of the screen, but it might work for you.

Yes, I have considered that. Unfortunately these files exist in a larger document library and because requiring a checkout is for the whole document library, it would affect everyone's files, which is not what we want.
